Cheap Things to do While Visiting Singapore

Cheap Things To Do In Singapore

Singapore is an island city state of approximately 50 kilometres by 27 kilometres. It’s a relatively flat city that has seen remarkable growth over the last fifty years.

Prior to the arrival of Sir Stamford Raffles in 1819, the waters around Singapore were known to be infested with pirates. These pirates were often local Malay seafarers or Chinese, who targeted trading ships passing through the strategic Malacca Straits. Nowadays Singapore is one of the leading finance and financial investment capitals of the world.

Singapore is a city with a colourful past and a bright future.

Whether on a city vacation or on a business trip at a convention hall in Singapore there are plenty of attractions to keep you occupied in the city. Here’s a list of some of the cheap things to do in Singapore.

Go to The Library

If you’re an avid reader then a trip to the Singapore National Library is a treat. Opened in 1995, thousands of books line the shelves and the library has access to over 1.7 million digital downloads. The library attracts over 11 million visitors annually, and is located on an 11,304 square metre site in Victoria Street within the Downtown zone. It is the country’s largest public library.

Visit Religious Buildings

Begin your trip at Telok Ayer (the oldest Taoist temple) before visiting Buddhist and Hindu temples, along with a Mosque all in the same South Bridge Road area. Take a short bus ride to Silat Rd Sikh Temple along Jalan Bukit Merah, and then back to Hill Street to check out the American Church before winding up at Saint Andrew’s Cathedral.

Restaurants

From roadside stalls to coffee shops, to hawker centres to five-star hotels and Michelin-star establishments, Singapore has something for everyone at every budget. With a strong Chinese and Indian influence one can enjoy curries in the Little India district or Chinese dishes in the Central Business District. For those less adventurous all of the recognized global chain restaurants are also represented in the city. To make up for a decadent culinary treat try some of the exotic fruits sold on most streets and markets.

Gardens by the Bay

Gardens by the Bay is evidence that some of the best attractions in Singapore don’t have to cost you a penny. Entrance into this huge man-made park is completely free all day, every day, and a getting a glimpse of the giant SuperTree Grove is a sight to behold. Come at night to see the 50-metre-high trees fabulously lit during the entertaining light show at 7:45 pm and 8:45 pm. Wander around and admire the ambience of the environment.

Fort Canning Park

The historically important Fort Canning Park is right in the centre of Singapore; easily reachable after a day’s shopping at the adjacent Orchard Road, or before cocktails at Clarke Quay, this lush green space popular with joggers, dog-walkers, history buffs or anybody wanting to escape from the city and recharge for a while.

Conclusion

Singapore offers a vibrant mix of history and modern attractions that can be enjoyed on a budget. Explore the National Library, visit diverse religious buildings, and savor affordable culinary delights at hawker centres. Enjoy free attractions like Gardens by the Bay and Fort Canning Park. With so many cheap things to do in Singapore, there’s no need to overspend to experience the city’s charm.
